“Whether you chant the Buddha’s name, recite the sutra, or merely offer flowers and incense, all your virtuous acts will implant benefits and roots of goodness in your life. With this conviction you should strive in faith.”

“Through chanting the daimoku of the Lotus Sutra, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, we can transmit benefit even to deceased family members, relatives, friends, or acquaintances who may have opposed our Buddhist practice—benefit that will warmly embrace them and lead them to a state of profound peace and comfort. Similarly, through the power of the Mystic Law, our family members and friends who have passed away in the course of the journey for kosen-rufu—whether from illness or as a result of unexpected accidents or natural disasters—will also be able to enter the path of Buddhahood. The best offering we can make for the eternal happiness of the departed is to live fully and strive vibrantly for kosen-rufu in their stead.”

April 27th – May 3rd, 2015
— WORDS OF THE WEEK —
Hurrah for the triumphant songs
of the people ringing out (across Japan)!
I’d like to express my utmost appreciation,
from the bottom of my heart,
to all of our great noble fellow members
who made these successive victories happen one after another!
Now, let’s strive, more than ever, to
develop trust with the people around us and
make the blossoms of good fortune
and benefit abound in our local community!

(*)Soka Gakkai (in Japan) endorses the Komeito Party, which won sweeping victories in local elections held on April 12th 26th, 2015.

The New Komeito was originally founded by Soka Gakkai in 1964 but later separated as an independent entity, with Soka Gakkai providing only electoral support. The New Komeito is committed to giving political voice to the most vulnerable and underrepresented members of society on the issues of peace, social security, education, the environment and human rights. It works to protect the interests of non-union labour and people who work in small and medium-sized companies and constituencies that makes up a large segment of the Japanese public.

“Showing true filial devotion is indeed the first step towards all people attaining enlightenment.

“’Faith for a harmonious family’ is one of the eternal guidelines of the Soka Gakkai. Naturally, some members may be the only ones in their families practising Nichiren Buddhism. I am well aware of how difficult that can be.

“In my youth, wishing for the happiness of my family, I chanted earnestly for my father to follow my mother’s lead and become a Soka Gakkai member as well. Sensing my ardent wish to share Buddhism with my father, Mr. Toda said to me at that time:

“’The important thing is that you stand up with strong faith. A big, magnificent umbrella can shelter many people all at once. In the same way, if one family member starts striving in faith, that person can protect the entire family. The benefit and good fortune you obtain through the wholehearted efforts you are making in your Buddhist practice will also be transmitted to your father. In his heart, he is already a Soka Gakkai member. I’m sure he’s quietly supporting you, and also very proud of you.”

“Indeed, my father always took a warm interest in the efforts I was making for kosen-rufu alongside Mr. Toda.”

“When one person stands up with strong faith, everyone in the family—even those who have not yet started practising—is enveloped in the light of the Mystic Law.

“In his letter to Soya Kyoshin, the Daishonin declares: ‘The blessings that you yourself enjoy are in fact treasures belonging to your late father’ (WND-1, 513).

“When you as an individual exert yourself in faith, you can also lead others in your environment towards the path to attaining Buddhahood. The lives of your family members, relatives, friends, and loved ones, too, even if they are suffering in such lower states as Hell or Hunger, will move in the direction of hope and happiness. Such is the tremendous power of the Mystic Law.

“Also, when you personally stand up and dedicate yourself to your mission for kosen-rufu in your local area, it will have a powerful ripple effect. The human revolution of a single individual opens the way to a breakthrough for the happiness and victory of all.”

“… if in a single moment of life we exhaust the pains and trials of millions of kalpas, then instant after instant there will arise in us the three Buddha bodies with which we are eternally endowed. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is just such a ‘diligent’ practice.”

“The Daishonin writes: ‘It [the Lotus Sutra] leads one person in the realm of hell, one person in the realm of hungry spirits, and thus one person in each of the nine realms of existence to Buddhahood, and thereby the way is opened for all living beings to attain Buddhahood’ (WND-1, 512).

“In Nichiren Buddhism, universal enlightenment is not an abstract theory or principle. What matters is whether the teaching actually helps an individual attain Buddhahood. One person, whatever their life state, gaining enlightenment, then serves as proof that the teaching can do the same for all people. The Daishonin likens this process to ‘the joints in a piece of bamboo: if one joint is ruptured, then all the joints will split’ (WND-1, 512).

“Likewise, when an individual who has been suffering from illness or financial hardship becomes happy, this opens a sure way to happiness for all others experiencing similar painful sufferings.”

“The future division was the first division I established after becoming the third president of the Soka Gakkai. [1] I set about personally fostering the future division members. Together, we studied and deeply engraved in our hearts the passage from the Daishonin’s writing ‘Letter from Sado’: ‘Those with the heart of a lion king are sure to attain Buddhahood’ (WND-1, 302).

“Countless ordinary people, unheralded men and women, have joined me in rousing the ‘heart of a lion king’ and striving fearlessly in the face of adversity to build the great, united bastion of the Soka Gakkai, an organisation dedicated to the noble cause of kosen-rufu.

“As such, the first, all-important element of the Soka Gakkai spirit that I would like the future division members to carry on is the ‘heart of a lion king.’

“Truly capable individuals are those who foster others.”

“Let us foster people and help them develop their potential for the sake of the future! Let us create capable individuals and send them out into society! Eternal light emanates from efforts to nurture people’s growth.

“The Uruguayan author José Enrique Rodó (1871–1917) declared: ‘A young mind is hospitable soil in which the seed of a single timely word will quickly yield immortal fruit.’ [1]

In fostering the future division members, we of the SGI impart timely, sincere encouragement to the soil of young minds. We sow the seeds of hope, self-improvement, and courage, and nurture the fruit of happiness and victory.

“’The voice carries out the work of the Buddha’ (OTT, 4), cites Nichiren Daishonin. Each word of encouragement we give to these young people—successors to the mission of eternally transmitting the Mystic Law—is an action of unsurpassed power that ‘carries out the work of the Buddha.’

“The Mystic Law does not exist apart from us. We should not look for it outside ourselves. Each of our lives is originally and inherently an entity of the Mystic Law. Chanting daimoku is the practice for drawing out the power that we already possess within us.

“Declaring that we are not truly practising the correct teaching of Buddhism if we seek outside of ourselves the fundamental cause for attaining enlightenment, the Daishonin sternly warns: ‘If you think the Law is outside yourself, you are embracing not the Mystic Law but an inferior teaching’ (WND-1, 3; ‘On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime’).

“Mr. Toda used to say: ‘Chanting daimoku cultivates the state of Buddhahood’; and ‘Faith means us ourselves having the most powerful conviction. When we chant daimoku with the firm belief that the heavenly deities will definitely protect us because we are entities of the Mystic Law, then that is precisely what will happen.’

“As the Daishonin says: ‘The five characters, Myoho-renge-kyo, contain within them all teachings’ (WND-1, 143). As such, the essence of Buddhism is the conviction that our lives are entities of the Mystic Law, and to manifest the benefits of the Mystic Law that reside within us and enjoy them.”
