May#12 Honoring our Mothers-Our Holiday Rituals

red mumsEvery year for Mother’s Day, when my mother was still living, we would always plant the rustic-looking,  wooden window boxes on the side of our carport and my mother’s side bedroom window with red and sometimes pink geraniums. I got real good at planting, watering and pruning them even in the hot Kentucky sun.

It was always an annual ritual and a big deal in our household to plant Mom’s window boxes. It was a given that this would be done. Then 7-10 days or so later would be my mother’s birthday.

Besides the planting or the mums, we would also do Mother’s Day brunch or dinner at home…sometimes, we would go out. Mom liked the coziness of the family being at the house for Mother’s day and eating in the dining room, since it was a special occasion.

How do you celebrate Mother’s Day? What rituals did your grow up doing? Which ones do you still do?
